Poverty Alleviation

“Remember the poor” (Gal. 2:10)

More than 24,000 Arlington residents—over 10% of the population—live below the poverty line. As housing costs continue to rise, families have less money to spend on food and clothing.

What could it look like, if we worked together?

  • Food Pantry

Sadly, many of our neighbors struggle to put food on the table. According to the Arlington Department of Human Services, food insecurity affects at least 7% of residents or 16,670 people in Arlington. To help meet life’s most basic need, Bridge Builder’s food pantry is open three days per week, providing meat and produce to over 30,000 people in 2024. Because the need is so great, Bridge Builders partners with Mission Nova and the Arlington County Food Coalition Initiative to create an interconnected food security system.

  • Rent & Utility Assistance

Affordable housing is a major concern in Arlington, affecting thousands of residents. For those needing help to pay their bills, Bridge Builders offers rent and utility assistance. Trained volunteers meet with recipients to understand their needs and resources, and connect them with other agencies and churches for ongoing development.

  • Job Training & Development

To work their way out of poverty, many people are eager and able to work, yet lack the skills or relationships necessary for success. Bridge Builders partners with Mission NOVA to provide job training and help in starting a small business. We are also developing a program called Empowerment, where participants learn to be image bearers of God in their work, understanding its inherent dignity and purpose. Graduates of the program will be provided help in connecting with members of partner churches in need of their services.

“We are so grateful for your help to our family. This means a great relief to us. We would like to say thank you to every person who made this possible.”
